No more manual bookkeeping. nextesy and bexio are both Swiss solutions for SMEs and the self-employed. But which software will really save you time in 2026 and suit your business?

As of: September 2026. Prices and features may have changed since then.

1. Artificial Intelligence in Accounting: nextesy is a Pioneer

Automation is the key difference between the two solutions.

nextesy is built from the ground up as an AI-native tool. Invoices are created in seconds, dunning runs automatically, and Swiss bank accounts are connected directly. Once set up, nextesy reconciles transactions automatically, without you having to intervene.

bexio offers receipt recognition in the mobile app bexio Go. However, a deeply integrated AI is missing on the desktop or for email import. In 2025, bexio announced the acquisition of Kontera to expand AI features, but the full integration is still in progress.

What this means for you: Those who prioritize automation save real hours per month with nextesy. Benchmark from the Swiss market: AI-supported accounting solutions reduce the effort from several hours to 15 to 30 minutes per month. bexio is a solid cloud tool, but the AI depth is significantly lower as of today.

→ For self-employed individuals and small teams without previous accounting knowledge, the AI advantage of nextesy is a real, measurable everyday benefit.

2. User-Friendliness: Start Without Prior Knowledge

No prior knowledge required. That is the promise of both providers. In practice, however, there are differences.

nextesy is explicitly aimed at self-employed individuals and small companies who do not have an accounting background. The user interface is designed for automation: receipts are recognized, accounts suggested, reconciliations carried out. You confirm instead of typing.

bexio has been on the market since 2013 and has a mature product state. The interface is familiar to many Swiss SMEs. However, for beginners, the complexity of some processes can be a hurdle.

Support in comparison: bexio only achieves 2.2 out of 5 stars in the support section on Capterra (as of 2026). Users report a so-called "call-first culture" when cancelling subscriptions. This is a warning sign for anyone who values straightforward customer care. Google reviews paint a similar picture: with over 2,000 reviews, the average as of September 2026 is only 3.9 stars.

nextesy is a younger company with around 40 employees across 3 locations. The team size allows for direct contact and fast response to feedback. Anyone who values personal support will appreciate this. nextesy's Google reviews support this: customers give nextesy an average of 4.8 stars, with the good support being highlighted particularly often. nextesy's data also proves this: the customer satisfaction rate of customers who have opened a ticket is over 85% in 2026 (as of September), and on average, you receive a response in less than 3 hours after opening a ticket.

3. Range of Functions: What Do You Really Need?

Both tools meet the basic Swiss requirements: double-entry bookkeeping, QR bills (mandatory since October 2022), VAT invoicing in accordance with FTA specifications. However, the scope beyond this differs significantly.

What nextesy covers: Invoicing, dunning, bank connection to Swiss banks, automatic transaction reconciliation, payroll accounting (OASI, ALV, BVG, withholding tax), CRM with Zefix integration, and document management. All inclusive, without additional modules. nextesy's level of automation is already over 60%, meaning that only 40% of bookings are created manually.

What bexio offers more: CRM, inventory management, time tracking (from the Optima package onwards) and a marketplace with over 100 verified integrations. bexio is functionally broader.

Important gaps in bexio (as of September 2026):

  • Cost centers are completely missing. Anyone who needs cost centers must switch to other solutions.

  • Payroll accounting is a paid add-on module with bexio, scaled by the number of employees. It is only included up to 25 employees in the Ultimate package.

  • Bank connection is not included in bexio's entry-level package, but only from the Advanced package onwards.

  • AI bookings are currently only possible with an additional Kontera account. This involves additional costs from CHF 14 per month and working with receipts takes place in two different tools.

nextesy has a more focused range of functions. For self-employed individuals and SMEs, this is sufficient in most cases. Anyone with complex ERP requirements is better off with bexio or another solution.

4. Product Development: Fast-Paced vs. Pending Modernization

nextesy was founded in September 2023 and is in a phase of rapid development. The company has raised CHF 3.3 million in pre-seed capital from Fifth Quarter Ventures and business angels. AI is the foundation of everything, all features are connected to it. The focus is on the continuous integration of new features in close cooperation with customers. As a rule, new features are released every two weeks.

bexio was founded in 2013 and has been on the market for over ten years. The solution belongs to the cloud generation of the early 2010s and has reached a stable, mature product state during this time. From an outside perspective, the strategic focus today lies on marketplace extensions.

What this means: bexio is stable and proven. nextesy is more agile and significantly closer to modern AI standards. Anyone prioritizing up-to-dateness and automation is better off with nextesy. Anyone who values reliability and an established ecosystem with many integrations will find this with bexio.

5. Value for Money: Direct Comparison

As of 1 March 2026, bexio renamed the packages and increased the prices. The entry-level package became about 16% more expensive compared to the former Starter price.

With monthly payment, bexio costs CHF 45 / CHF 52 / CHF 79 / CHF 129 per month.

Real costs with bexio: The entry-level package sounds cheap, but quickly becomes confusing and is very limited. Bank connection is only included from the Advanced package onwards. Payroll accounting is added as a separate add-on module scaled by the number of employees. Time tracking is only available from Optima onwards. Depending on your needs, the add-on modules quickly add up, and it takes attention to keep track of the actual total costs.

nextesy already offers bank connection and payroll accounting for SMEs from CHF 29/mth in the Plus package. Additional costs only arise for payroll employees who exceed the number included in the package (from 2 employees in the SME package, from 4 in the Pro package). These are the only variable costs that can be added.

6. Integrations: bexio Has the Breadth, nextesy Builds Internally

bexio is the clear market leader here. Over 100 verified business apps can be integrated via the bexio Marketplace: from online shops and POS systems to industry-specific tools. Almost every Swiss trustee knows bexio, and the trustee interface is established. This is a real advantage for growing SMEs with complex workflows.

nextesy is younger and has fewer third-party integrations, but already covers many functions of external integrations within the product itself. The Zefix integration in the CRM is a useful Swiss detail. For the vast majority of small companies and self-employed individuals, nextesy's range of integrations is more than sufficient in everyday life.

Who is this crucial for? Anyone who relies on specific third-party systems, for example an online shop, a POS system or an industry solution, should check the bexio Marketplace specifically. nextesy has already rebuilt the elementary integrations offered by bexio within its own system. So, anyone who does not depend on a specific integration provider, but simply needs a certain feature, will get along better with nextesy due to the uniform design and the linking of all functions.

Both providers support the most important Swiss requirements: QR bill, VAT, CHF invoicing.

7. Support and Trustee Compatibility

According to its own figures (as of 2025), market leader bexio has a large support apparatus with over 100,000 customers. At the same time, the Capterra rating of 2.2 out of 5 stars in the support area (as of 2026) shows that size does not automatically mean better care. Users report difficulties when cancelling subscriptions and a lack of availability in daily life.

With around 40 employees, nextesy is significantly smaller. This enables direct contact and rapid response; anyone calling nextesy support typically waits less than 30 seconds on the line before someone answers. The company is run by five co-founders who cover finance, sales, AI, accounting, and technology themselves. The team is backed by the ETH AI Center, HSG, Innosuisse, and LMU Munich as advisors.

For trustees: bexio has been the established standard among Swiss trustees for years. However, with the passage of time, bexio is increasingly unable to meet the constantly changing needs and, above all, the desire for greater efficiency. The lack of or too slow development of the product forces trustees to examine other solutions more closely.

nextesy was primarily developed for the fiduciary industry before the SME focus was added. Through close cooperation with fiduciary partners, nextesy is well on its way to setting the new standard for the industry. The module for fiduciary professionals offers mandate management, real-time collaboration, and other helpful functions.

8. Conclusion: Which Software Is Right for You?

The decision between nextesy and bexio depends on your priorities.

nextesy is the right choice if you:

  • Are self-employed or run a small team of up to 25 employees

  • Prioritize automation and efficiency gains over a broad range of features

  • Do not need a wide integration ecosystem

  • Want payroll accounting and bank connection with transparent, predictable costs

bexio remains the better choice if you:

  • Rely on marketplace integrations with over 100 apps

  • Need inventory management, time tracking or specific industry modules

  • Work with a fiduciary office that prefers bexio

The switch from bexio to nextesy is straightforward. For sole proprietorships, the effort is about half a working day. Download receipts and data before cancelling, keeping in mind the statutory retention period of 10 years. Anyone switching from another product to nextesy benefits from the Switch tariff: nextesy only costs CHF 1 per month until the notice period with the old provider has expired.
